Beekeeping Expert To Discuss Bee Survival, Healthy Hives In Weston

WESTON, CT — A nationally recognized beekeeper and author will speak in Weston later this month about bee health, hive survival and honey production.

The Back Yard Beekeepers Association announced Theresa Martin, author of “Dead Bees Don’t Make Honey: 10 Tips for Healthy Productive Bees,” will give an in-person presentation Tuesday, May 26, at Norfield Congregational Church in Weston.

The event begins at 7 p.m. at the church, located at 64 Norfield Road, with Martin’s presentation scheduled to start at 7:30 p.m., organizers said.

According to the association, Martin’s talk will focus on the latest science surrounding how bees survive in the wild and how beekeepers can apply those practices to improve hive survival and honey production.

Martin is a Cornell Master Beekeeper, the 2024 Kentucky State Beekeeper of the Year and president of the Kentucky State Beekeepers Association, according to organizers.

The association said Martin has achieved a 99 percent colony survival rate while managing 20 to 25 colonies in Kentucky using “nature-based beekeeping” practices.

The event is free to attend, though organizers asked attendees to register in advance through the Back Yard Beekeepers Association website. Copies of Martin’s book will also be available for purchase and signing at the event, according to organizers.

There will not be a virtual attendance option, organizers said.
