Easton resident update

This post was contributed by a community member.

Greetings from Town Hall!

The main theme of my administration is environmental and land use issues. Let’s save Easton!

CONSERVATION, LAND USE, WATERSHED, & ENVIRONMENTAL PRESERVATION ISSUES

DON’T FORGET TO PICK UP YOUR COMPLIMENTARY BEARDSLEY ZOO TICKETS AT THE EASTON PUBLIC LIBRARY! Tickets will be available next week on a first-come, first-served basis. We sincerely thank a generous Easton resident for his support of our community, and we encourage residents to take advantage of this wonderful opportunity to visit Connecticut’s Beardsley Zoo in Bridgeport.

On Sunday, June 7th, we have arranged for complimentary admission for 50 Easton residents (first-come, first-served) at Earthplace in Westport, which also offers youth summer camps.

FREE BIRD GUIDE: Pick up a waterproof Backyard Birds of the Northeast guide, now available at Town Hall on a first-come, first-served basis. Courtesy of Bill Karesh, these handy, easy-to-use guides are perfect for bird lovers of all ages—whether you’re identifying visitors at your backyard feeder or exploring local trails. Stop by and grab one while supplies last – they are flying out of here!

HELP US PROTECT EASTON’S NATURAL BEAUTY: Multiflora Rose (Rosa multiflora) is a thorny shrub that can form dense thickets and can also climb like a vine. It spreads by root suckering, tip layering, and by seed dispersal when wildlife consume its fruits. Often found along roadsides and fields. DO NOT PLANT! Control: Hand pull or dig, removing the entire root to prevent resprouting. Repeated mowings during the growing season for 2-4 years can be effective.

EMS BUILDING PROJECT ENVIRONMENTAL CONTAMINATION UPDATE:
Chris Buck (the Licensed Environmental Professional) dug six test pits on May 28, 2026, in the leaching field area. Installing the leaching fields will pause until the analytical results return. If results confirm clean soil, Ed Nagy's crew can proceed with the approximately 500-yard excavation for the septic leaching fields. All test pits will be analyzed for ETPH, PAHs, and VOCs to ensure comprehensive fuel oil coverage, including gasoline.

PUBLIC SAFETY: Please remember to “Slow Down in Our Town” and help keep our roads safe by avoiding speeding.

MENTAL HEALTH AWARENESS MONTH: May is Mental Health Awareness Month, a reminder that mental health is an important part of our overall well-being. Taking care of ourselves and supporting one another helps build a healthier, stronger, and more connected community. This month, Easton was fortunate to host a Mental Health and Self-Care session at the Fire House, featuring speaker Brian Pasqurell and organized by Schuyler Sherwood. Thank you to everyone who helped make this thoughtful and informative event possible and for helping bring attention to the importance of mental health and self-care. Whether through checking in on a friend, taking time to recharge, seeking support when needed, or simply showing kindness, small actions can make a meaningful difference. Mental health matters every month of the year, and together we can continue fostering a community that values compassion, understanding, and support for all. For assistance in Connecticut, dial 988 for the Suicide and Crisis Lifeline, and dial 211 for assistance with human services, including mental health.

SAFE KIDS CONNECTICUT: We are pleased to share that Easton Police Officer Anthony Telesco #19 successfully applied for and received a grant through Safe Kids Connecticut to support a community Car Seat Safety Event. Safe Kids Connecticut works to prevent childhood injuries by promoting education, awareness, and safety initiatives focused on keeping children safe while traveling. This grant will help provide resources and support for a child passenger safety event where families can have car seats inspected for proper installation and fit, receive hands-on guidance from certified technicians, and learn important information about current car seat safety recommendations and best practices. Proper car seat use significantly reduces the risk of injury in the event of a crash, and events like this help ensure parents and caregivers have access to expert assistance and up-to-date safety information. In addition, car seats are currently available for families in need through the program. The tentative date for the event is September 24, 2026, from 8:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. More details will be shared as the date approaches. Thank you to Officer Telesco for pursuing this valuable opportunity and for his continued commitment to the safety and well-being of Easton families.

MEMORIAL DAY PARADE: Easton’s Memorial Day Parade and celebration were truly special this year. Although it was a bit of a scramble adjusting the schedule due to the weather, the parade went off without a hitch, including the wonderful “Popcorn,” the horse, and rider Tobia Costanzo proudly leading the procession. From the moving display of American flags lining Center Road to the strong turnout of families, veterans, local organizations, and community groups, the day reflected the very best of Easton. The parade, ceremony at Town Hall, and remembrances at Union and Aspetuck cemeteries provided meaningful opportunities to honor and remember those who gave their lives in service to our country. Thank you to the Easton Fire Department, veterans, volunteers, participants, and everyone who helped make this cherished community tradition such a memorable and respectful event. Here is the speech I read.

THE EASTON OBSERVER For a copy, please email: publisher@eastonobserver.org or subscribe at www.eastonobserver.org. On behalf of the whole Observer team, thank you for your readership.

INFRASTRUCTURE TASK FORCE We are looking for two resident volunteers with building or construction experience to join the newly created Infrastructure Task Force. If interested, please email your letter of interest and resume to treynolds@eastonct.gov, and she will set up a short interview with me.

SHELTER UPDATE: Great news! Oreo has been adopted! We are so glad he has gone to a loving home! The shelter still has a few adorable pups — Snoopy, Parker, and Applejack — who are looking for someone to love and a home where they can truly thrive. Each one is ready to offer loyalty, companionship, and unconditional love to the right family. Please help spread the word so these wonderful dogs can find the caring homes they deserve and live their very best lives. For more information, please contact Easton Animal Control at 203-268-9172.

Wishing everyone a wonderful weekend!

AMERICA 250! 250 YEARS OF FREEDOM Highlighting Easton’s history, civic pride, and volunteer spirit!

POMEROY HISTORIC MARKER FOR EASTON – TODAY, MAY 29 - AS PART OF AMERICA 250
Join us this Friday at 5:00 PM for a special evening celebrating Easton’s history and our community’s America 250 commemorations. We are delighted to mark the dedication of the new Pomeroy Foundation Historic Marker honoring Staples Academy, one of Easton’s earliest and most significant educational institutions. Founded in 1781 by philanthropist Samuel Staples, Staples Academy was established as an early “free school” created to provide educational opportunities to children who otherwise may not have had access to schooling. The marker recognizes the Academy’s important role not only in Easton’s history, but also in the broader story of early American education. The dedication ceremony will include guest speakers and the unveiling of the historic marker, which reads:

Staples AcademyEarly Free School FoundedIn 1781 by Philanthropist Samuel Staples for Poor Children.Schoolhouse Erected 1795.Educated Young Women and Men.

Following the ceremony, attendees are invited to enjoy the first public viewing of the America 250 Easton exhibit, showcasing stories, artifacts, and moments that reflect Easton’s rich historical legacy. This recognition is especially meaningful as it represents the culmination of more than two years of research and work to secure formal recognition for this remarkable site. We hope residents of all ages will join us for this memorable community celebration. The event is free and open to the public.

THREE TOWNS TOUR - MAY 30 - AS PART OF AMERICA 250
From its earliest days, Fairfield was a sprawling town. Stretching from the Saugatuck River in the west to what is now Bridgeport’s Park Avenue in the east, and northward to the hills of Redding, Fairfield’s original bounds encompassed a vast and dynamic region. With a flourishing population, new parishes and religious beliefs took root, and distant communities began to forge their own paths. Thus emerged the neighboring towns of Redding, Westport, Weston, and Easton—shaped from Fairfield lands. Join us for a special bus tour (beginning at the Fairfield Museum) to discover the unique stories found in Fairfield, Weston, and Easton, and explore the shared history among all three towns. Registration is required. $80/person. BUY TICKETS. At the end of the bus tour, join us for a special opening reception for the special FREE exhibition “Happy Anniversary! Centenary Celebrations & Beyond” at the Congregational Church Hall in Easton. The Staples Academy will host a special exhibit featuring artifacts and documents from the colonial and early national period. While the exhibit is open to the public by request every day, it will be fully open that day for tour participants and additional visitors to enjoy. Co-presented by Weston History & Culture Center and Historical Society of Easton. If you have any questions, please call (347) 678-7230.

THE REDDING CELEBRATES AMERICA 250 PROJECT - MAY 30 - AS PART OF AMERICA 250
This event was organized by a group of volunteers and will culminate with a concert featuring the entire Greater Bridgeport Symphony on Saturday, May 30th at 7:00 pm at Joel Barlow High School in the school's theater. This is a two-town event despite its name. About half of the money raised thus far has come from Easton residents, and the fact that there will be Easton students participating in the concert is significant to the Town. READING OF THE DECLARATION OF INDEPENDENCE – July 8 - AS PART OF AMERICA 250
On July 8th, I will have the honor of reading the Declaration of Independence in front of Town Hall in celebration of the nation’s upcoming 250th anniversary. This meaningful occasion offers a chance to reflect on our shared history and the enduring ideals of freedom, unity, and democracy that continue to guide and inspire our community and country. Residents are warmly invited to join us for this special moment as we come together to commemorate this milestone and celebrate our nation’s legacy.
