This is a male Northern Cardinal undergoing a "catastrophic molt," which leaves the bird temporarily bald on its head. While it looks quite jarring or even vulture-like, it is actually a well-documented phenomenon that typically happens during late summer and early autumn.

EASTON RECEIVES $300,000 GRANT FOR REGIONAL DISPATCH TRANSITION
On August 21, 2026, the Town of Easton received a $300,000 grant from the State of Connecticut to reimburse expenses related to the transition of Easton's emergency telecommunications services to the Fairfield County Regional Dispatch Center (FCRD). Easton received the maximum allowable grant for a Public Safety Answering Point (PSAP) transition. The regional dispatch initiative is expected to enhance emergency response coordination, improve efficiency, and reduce long-term costs through shared infrastructure and services. The review and transition process has been underway for more than a year. Since May 5, all 911 services for Easton have been dispatched through FCRD, and the transition has gone better than expected. The Town is now in the final phase of the transition, with new infrastructure and security measures in place. Remaining work includes integrating the new radio systems for fire and police and fine-tuning procedures. We are very pleased that the FCRD transition has remained on time and on budget, and we are grateful to the strong team of Town staff, public safety personnel, and regional partners who have worked together to make this important improvement a success for the safety of our community.
SAFE ROADS, SAFE RIDERS, SAFE EASTON
The Town of Easton Emergency Management Team is committed to keeping everyone safe on our roads. Our rural roads are shared by motorists, runners, walkers, bicyclists, and increasingly, e-bike and other micromobility riders. As we head into fall, shorter days, wet leaves, curves, narrow roads, and limited shoulders can make it harder to see vulnerable road users. Motorists are asked to slow down, stay alert, and give runners and bicyclists plenty of room when passing. The growing popularity of e-bikes has also created new safety concerns, particularly for young riders. Information provided to the Town reports 6 e-bike-related fatalities and 123 injuries in Connecticut in 2025, with helmet use remaining a significant concern. Easton is taking a proactive approach. The Easton Police Department is working with our schools, and the Office of the Fire Marshal will be speaking with every class at Helen Keller Middle School about safe and responsible e-bike and micromobility use. Parents and families can help. Talk with young riders about responsible riding, make sure they wear a helmet every time, and become familiar with Connecticut's e-bike laws and safety requirements. Riders should remember that our roads are shared spaces and watch carefully for pedestrians, bicyclists, runners, and vehicles. Everyone has a role to play:

EASTON'S HISTORY: Did You Know?
Jesse Lee United Methodist Church has some serious staying power! Its roots in our community date all the way back to 1789, when Methodist circuit rider Jesse Lee brought Methodism to the area—long before Easton became a town in 1845. The church's historic sanctuary was built around 1813 and still stands on Flat Rock Road today. And those early circuit riders didn't have it easy! There was an old New England saying: "Only the crows and the Methodist preachers would be out on a day like today."

STAY INFORMED. STAY SAFE. SIGN UP FOR EVERBRIDGE! Easton has launched Everbridge, our primary emergency notification system. Sign up to receive important alerts about severe weather, police activity, utility outages, road closures, and other emergencies by phone, text, and email. Please register yourself and ask your spouse and adult children to register as well. Every family member with a cell phone or email should be signed up so they can receive critical information directly. Register for Everbridge and get more information HERE. Need help registering? Assistance is available at the Senior Center, or call 203-689-2995. Please take a few minutes to register today. It could make a difference when you need important information most.

STATE OFFERS $300 GROCERY BENEFIT FOR CERTAIN FORMER SNAP RECIPIENTS: Connecticut is providing a one-time $300 grocery benefit to eligible residents who recently lost SNAP benefits due to new federal ABAWD (Able-Bodied Adults Without Dependents) eligibility requirements. Eligible individuals should contact their local Community Action Agency to verify eligibility and request the benefit. The prepaid grocery card can be used to purchase SNAP-eligible food items and does not affect eligibility for other assistance programs. GROW-A-ROW *DONATIONS ACCEPTED EVERY TUESDAY* Did you grow some extra produce? Please consider donating to Grow-A-Row! This program brings fresh produce to seniors in town. This will run from 9 AM-12 PM at Shaggy Coos. Donations will be every Tuesday at these hours until the first week of September.
REGIONAL DISPATCH CENTER UPDATE: Easton's transition to the Fairfield County Regional Dispatch Center has been running smoothly since May 5, with all emergency and non-emergency calls continuing to be answered and dispatched promptly. Key reminders:
Emergency call boxes are available outside the Police and Fire Departments, and additional security cameras and after-hours access systems are now in place at Town Hall, the Police Department, and other municipal facilities. 2026 REVALUATION INSPECTIONS UPDATE: The 2026 Real Estate Revaluation process has entered the Market Analysis and Valuation Phase. The revaluation company will continue conducting resident-requested inspections and active building permit inspections throughout the process. Residents are also encouraged to visit the Town's Property Taxes Explained page to learn more about how property taxes are determined. BOOK COLLECTION: The Friends of the Easton Library are collecting book donations at the library during normal hours through Monday, September 21st. We gratefully accept books, CDs, DVDs, records, games, and puzzles as long as they are in good condition for inclusion in our annual book sale. The book sale will be held on the first weekend in October.
SAFE KIDS CONNECTICUT: Reminder, car seats are currently available for families in need through the program. Please contact the Police Department at 203-268-3515 from 8 am to 4 pm. Monday through Friday.
LIFE-SAVING RESOURCES AVAILABLE AT THE EASTON POLICE DEPARTMENT: For the safety and well-being of our community, a Narcan (naloxone) box is now available on the wall in the lobby of the Easton Police Department for Easton residents who may need access to this opioid overdose reversal medication. In addition, an AED (Automated External Defibrillator) is located in the lobby for use during a cardiac emergency. These resources are part of the Town's ongoing commitment to supporting public health and emergency preparedness.

CENTER FOR FAMILY JUSTICE TO HOST ANNUAL SPEAKING OF WOMEN LUNCHEON: The Center for Family Justice will hold its 29th Annual Speaking of Women luncheon on Tuesday, September 15, at The Waterview in Monroe. This year's event will feature keynote speaker Stephen Mills, author of Chosen: A Memoir of Stolen Boyhood, and honor Donna Craft for 30 years of service to CFJ.
