Barlow Field Hockey Routs Watertown

Katherine Acocella scores twice in 5-0 win over the Indians

The Joel Barlow varsity field hockey team hosted Watertown on Friday evening in the annual "Play for the Cure" game and rolled to a 5-0 victory against the overmatched Indians.

From the onset, Barlow's attack was deep in the Watertown zone, placing constant pressure on the visitors. The Falcons put on an offensive passing clinic, moving the ball at will.

Senior co-captain Katherine Acocella opened the scoring early in the first half as fellow senior co-captains Brit Lofgren and Samantha Macchio split the defense with crisp passes to Acocella, who drilled the shot into the back of the cage.

Acocella followed up with her second of the game off a feed from the Falcons' attackers. Barlow's offense was non-stop as the offense continued to mount the pressure.

Lofgren scored next off a feed from Acocella, followed by. Macchio who hammered home a goal. Junior Kerianne Gibney finished the scoring early in the second half.

Senior co-captain Anne Dolan was skillful in setting up the attack from her midfield position.

Head coach Erika Profenno emptied her bench early in the second half in an effort to control the scoring and provide an opportunity for her reserves to gain valuable playing minutes as Barlow prepares for the end of the regular season and playoffs to follow.

"It is a great day when your entire offensive front scores," Profenno said. "It doesn't get better than that."

The Falcons (10-2-2) will be hard at work this week, preparing for  home matches versus SWC rivals Bethel on Monday and Newtown on Tuesday evening in the annual Senior Night game.
