Barlow Softball Drops 1-0 Decision To Defending SWC Champion Newtown

Falcons look to snap a two-game losing streak at Masuk on Monday

The Joel Barlow softball team lost a 1-0 heartbreaker to defending SWC champion Newtown on Friday on Friday afternoon in Redding.

Sophomore Morgan Bonis (3-1) and Newtown's ace Emma Herring locked up in a memorable clash as both teams position for postseason play in one of the region's most competitive softball conferences.

Bonis threw only 58 pitches in the game, yielding five hits, while Herring threw 67 in her two hit shutout of the Falcons.  Bonis had the support of a flawless defense behind but the Falcons' bats were quiet.

At the halfway mark of the season, the Falcons are going to have to play balanced ball against solid competition to make it back to the SWC playoffs after several years of failing to reach the postseason in the conference.

Bonis and co-captain Sonia Giorgio were the only two Falcons to reach base on singles while Maeve Smith reached on a hard-hit ball that was bobbled up the middle.

Barlow turned two more double plays and key contributors to the solid defense included infielders Giorgio, Victoria Shea, Emma Traggianese and Sarah McAniff, along with outfielders Smith and Katherine Acocella.

The Falcons (7-4, 4-4 in the SWC) have key league matchups this week at Masuk (Monday), home against Stratford (Wednesday) and at New Milford on Friday.
