Easton Police Warn Residents Of Latest Scams

As the world becomes more complicated, the scams are becoming more sophisticated...

EASTON, CT — The Easton Police Department is warning residents of three scams the agency says have become popular this time each year.

Perpetrators of the Amazon gift card scam call residents claiming their Amazon account has been compromised, asking to verify it. The scammers then direct victims to purchase gift cards to put in their account, for which they will be reimbursed.

"They sound convincing," police officials warned on social media, "however, anyone that asks you to purchase gift cards is more than likely a scam."

For what they call the "driveway scam," police said workers with asphalt will drive around looking for someone that wants their driveway done at a much lower price than normal. The scammers will then pave the driveway with low grade "tack coat" and tell the customer that it cost more than expected, or that if they want the better asphalt they need to pay more money.

"All contractors must be approved with the Department of Consumer Protection," police avise residents.

If someone saying they are from Microsoft calls to tell you your computer has been hacked and they need to fix it, you're being scammed, police warned.

"By doing this, they will gain access to your computer and have control of all your usernames and passwords," police officials said. "Be aware Microsoft will never call you claiming your computer is infected."

Residents with questions are urged to call the Easton Police Department at 203-268-4111.
