October in Connecticut means fall foliage AND pink! Although breast cancer awareness is an important focus during the month, the hardships faced by women battling the disease requires attention too. According to a study published last year in the American Journal of Medicine, “More than 42 percent of the 9.5 million people diagnosed with cancer from 2000 to 2012 drained their life's assets within two years. Cancer patients are 2.65 times more likely to file for bankruptcy than those without cancer, and bankruptcy puts them at a higher risk for early death.”

Pink Aid, a Connecticut-based 501C3 charity that delivers “compassion until there’s a cure” helps women who lack access to screening or the financial resources to survive their breast cancer treatment with support and dignity.

A record crowd attended Pink Aid’s 9th Annual Luncheon at Mitchell’s of Westport on Thursday, October 3rd to hear Giuliana Rancic and Pink Purse recipient, Dr. Joan Miller, share their personal journeys. The vibe was decidedly groovy for “Love Potion #9” chaired by survivors who had previously walked our Warrior runway; Westport’s Debbie Katz and Brookfield’s Katherine Matero. Marcia Selden Catering served the comfort foods of the 60’s from Swedish meatballs to gourmet Twinkies, all on TV dinner trays by a staff in go-go boots. The fashion show featured Mitchell’s Fall 19 Must-Haves - with trends from animal prints to serious sparkle on the catwalk. There was even more sparkle courtesy of famed handbag designer, Judith Leiber Couture, who donated a bespoke pink beaded heart purse to the event. The emotional core was, as always, the Warrior Fashion Show celebrating breast cancer survivors, walking with loved ones.
