Mosquitoes in Easton Test Positive for West Nile Virus

EASTON, CT -- Entomologists from the Connecticut Agricultural Experiment Station are reporting that mosquitoes in Easton have tested positive for West Nile Virus.

The mosquitoes in the sampling were from a single pool of mosquitoes collected June 18, containing a sub-species of the insect that preys almost exclusively on birds and rarely bites -- or jeopardizes -- people.

Officials said the state will closely monitor virus activity at that site by increasing the trapping frequency from once every 10 days to twice a week.

This is the second time inside of a month when local bugs tested positive for the illness. In June, CASE announced mosquitoes sampled from a pool of water in New Canaan had likewise tested positive for the virus.
