Obituary: Alice Whitlock Hollett, of Redding

A family historian, Alice had a life-long passion for collecting odd wooden kitchen tools and refinishing antiques.

REDDING, CT — Alice Whitlock Hollett, age 87, died at her home in Redding, Connecticut on January 23, 2019. Born in Mineola, NY in 1932, she was the daughter of George Frederick Whitlock and Mary Pope Whitlock.

Alice was predeceased by her husband, William Cox Hollett; daughter Wendy Dayton Hollett; grandson Reed Marshall Hollett, and by a handful of retrievers who brought her joy and endless tufts of golden fur on dark clothing. She is survived by her son Doug Hollett, daughter Robin Wilcox, brother George Whitlock, plus four grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

Alice and Bill lived variously in Weston, Redding and Oxford over the years, yet they had an abiding love for their cottage in Maine, listening to loons on the lake and traversing the changing weather and seasons.

A family historian, Alice had a life-long passion for collecting odd wooden kitchen tools and refinishing antiques. This matched Bill's interest in exotic shop tools, repairing old chairs and tinkering with his model 'T'. She volunteered with Hospice and hospitals in Norwalk and Bridgeport for over 30 years. Alice took up traditional rug hooking in the 1960s, and her artistic floor and wall pieces reflected an appreciation for subtle color and tone changes and weaving a bigger story. Finally, she was a lover of words and literature, and leaves numerous books with insightful and witty observations in the margins.

In lieu of flowers, which Alice would find too much of a fuss, the family suggests consideration of a donation to the Kezar Lake Watershed Association or the Greater Lovell Land Trust, both at 208 Main St, Lovell ME 04051. Together they advance conservation and protection for a place she loved more than anywhere else in the world.
