Redding Country Club Holds 46th Annual Women's Member Guest

The theme of this year's event was women and golf; making history for centuries.

Fifty-six players came to the Redding Country Club for the Annual Member Guest Tournament. They held a practice round on Wednesday, July 22 and the Tournament round on Thursday, July 23. Fantastic weather greeted the players on both days.

  • Mary Queen of Scots coining the term “Caddie” in 1552 at the Old Course at St. Andrews, Scotland.
  • Issette Miller inventing the handicap system in 1893.
  • The first US Women’s Open won by Patty Berg in 1934.
  • Mickey Wright and Barbara Romack defeating Arnold Palmer and Dow Finsterwald in a CBS Sports Spectacular in 1961.
  • Kathy Whitworth becoming the first woman golfer to earn more than $1million and winning her 83rd tournament in 1981.
  • Juli Inkster wins the only Professional Golf event for both Men & Women – the 1990 ATT Invitational Pro-Am at Pebble Beach.
  • Lydia Ko became the youngest golfer of either gender to be ranked the Number 1 Professional at 17 years 9 months.

Before the tournament round on Thursday, photos were taken of the contestants with Redding resident Bill King’s 1934 Packard V12 and some classic golf clubs.

Competition on Thursday was spirited with a format of 2 balls gross and 2 balls net. Special competitions included closest to the pin on the 8th hole and longest drive on the 15th hole.

1st Place Gross - Sharon Nightingale, Janet Karabin, Collette Heidekoper, Ellie Large.

2nd Place Gross - Leila Stuhr, Carol Fitzsimmons, Laura Imrie, Cathy Birch.

3rd Place Gross - Fausta Marino, Lynn Marino, Terri Tyson Bennett, Nancy Marshall.

1st Place Net - Donna Forshaw, Shirleen Dubuque, Holly West, Kendall Croswell.

2nd Place Net - Molly Macauley, Eileen Rice, Susan Diloreto, Pam Kelley.

3rd Place Net - Janet Tatusko, Amy Blount, Mary Lou Conroy, Christine Hare.

Closest to the Pin - Member: Carolyn Savitsky 16’6”

Guest: Cathy Birch 19”.

Longest Drive – Member: Lisa LeBlanc

Guest: Shirleen Dubuque.
