Pen-Stars Lead Creative Writing Workshop at Easton Public Library

On Wednesday, Dec. 2, the library will host a creative writing workshop for children ages 7 - 11 featuring Pen-Stars™.

The Pen-Stars™ series is an interactive book series created by children, for children. It aims to cultivate and enhance children’s creativity and language arts skills in a fun and innovative way. It provides a creative platform where children write and illustrate stories to become published authors and artists. “Children will enjoy exploring their creativity through this workshop. It’s a great opportunity to write, draw, and create in a totally supportive environment,” said Lynn Zaffino, Assistant Library Director and Head of Youth Services.

The first book, Happy Celebrations!, which is co-authored by two sisters, Sushmita and Himani Narayan, was launched in December 2014. It consists of three stories which are written and hand-illustrated by them. Each story includes keywords at the bottom of each page to help enhance children’s vocabulary. The book has a section called My Creative Corner, where children can create their own stories and submit them via mail or by uploading them on the Pen-Stars™ website (http://thepenstars.com/). Each story is reviewed by their panel of judges. Children are rewarded for their creativity in different ways. Some are featured on their website as the Artist of the Month or the Author of the Month and some will be published in future editions of the series. All the participants receive a Certificate of Participation.

The overarching goal of Pen-Stars™ is to motivate children to put pen and paper together and create stories, and to appreciate, recognize, and reward them for their efforts. This will give them an incentive to be more engaged in creative activities, rather than spending time on digital devices.

Registration is required and can be done through the Library’s Online Calendar at www.eastonlibrary.org; by emailing Lynn Zaffino at lzaffino@eastonlibrary.org; or by calling the Library at 203-261-0134.
