You won't guess what town came out #1 on a new "Best Places To Live" List for Connecticut.

Rankings website Niche.com just published its 2022 list of the "best places to live in Connecticut." Where does your town fall on the list?

CONNECTICUT, CT— School rankings website Niche.com has branched out to include towns, and has just published its 2022 ratings for Connecticut municipalities.

At the top of its list was West Hartford, which garnered an overall "A+" grade. The town received top marks for its public schools, family friendliness, and the health/fitness of its residents. It was also No. 1 on the list of the best suburbs in the state, and 10th on the list of best places to raise a family in Connecticut. Making comparisons to the rest of the U.S., Niche ranked West Hartford No. 88 among the country's suburbs, and No. 171 among American municipalities overall.

Niche drew upon data from the Federal Bureau of Investigation's Uniformed Crime Report, the US Census Bureau's American Community Survey, the US Department of Agriculture's Food Environment Atlas and other sources, as well as millions of resident reviews.

Niche graded all the top 10 towns with an "A+," but individual category ratings varied.

The most heavily weighted categories were cost of living and the percentage of residents who have received a bachelor’s degree or higher. Those factors combined to make up 24 percent of a town's overall rating.

Niche based its housing grade on home values, property taxes, housing costs, local schools, and other factors. It accounted for 10 percent of the overall score as did the public school grade, which was based on Niche's own rankings. A town's diversity weighed in as the next most important factor contributing to its final grade, above crime, family friendliness, residents' health, nightlife, walkability, outdoor activities and the job market.

The length of commute factored into the final score, but it was weighted the least.

Dwelling in the cellar of Niche's list of best Connecticut towns is Canaan, which scored an overall grade of "C-." Strong "B+" scores in diversity, health, commute and schools couldn't overcome the "D"'s and "C"'s in housing, jobs, family friendliness and cost of living.

Sterling, Scotland, North Canaan and Hampton round out the bottom five.
