The Barlow softball team fell to visiting New Fairfield 7-5 on Wednesday for its first loss of the season in front of a lively home crowd.
The Falcons have been riding solid defense all year, but the tide turned on Wednesday as the Rebels took advantage of several Falcons' miscues in the second inning to jump out to a 4-0 lead.

Barlow's bats did come alive, collecting 10 hits to keep the contest close.

Co-captain Sonia Giorgio led the Barlow offense with a 3-for 4 performance, which included a double, two runs scored and an RBI.
Katherine Acocella (2-for 3 with a walk and run scored) and Dolan's (2-for-4 with and RBI and run scored) also kept Barlow in the game.
The Falcons displayed a never-say-die attitude and kept coming back, but tentative defense enabled the Rebels to maintain their lead.
This game could go a long way toward building the character that the Falcons will need as they hope to make the SWC playoffs.
Barlow, which dropped to 6-1 overall and 3-1 in the SWC, travels to Milford on Thursday for another key league matchup at Lauralton Hall, one of the state's premier teams.
Barlow will attempt to avenge a tough 5-3 loss to Lauralton Hall last year.
