-- The Joel Barlow varsity softball team opened the 2011 season with a convincing 16-1 non-league win over Abbott Tech at Hatters Park in Danbury on Wednesday.

Junior Anne Dolan and sophomore Morgan Bonis combined to no-hit the host Warriors in the run-shortened five inning game, the result of the mercy rule.

Dolan was near perfect as she started the contest by fanning three over two innings. Bonis (1-0) recorded the win striking out three of her own, while struggling through the fourth inning, when she walked the first three batters  before settling down to hold the hosts to one earned run.

Barlow started the season on a high note, racking up 13 runs in the first inning, highlighted by a bases-loaded double by sophomore Sarah McAniff.

The Falcons'  attack was led by shortstop McAniff, who singled, doubled and scored twice while driving in two. Center fielder Katherine Acocella, right fielder Ashley Prusak and Dolan each contributed two hits, drove in two and scored twice over five innings.

Barlow (1-0) returns to Redding on Thursday as the Falcons host Notre Dame of Fairfield at 3:30 p.m. in the home opener.
