The Joel Barlow varsity softball team mixed timely hitting, solid pitching and sharp defense in shutting out SWC rival Notre Dame of Fairfield 10-0 in the Falcons' home opener at Barlow on Thursday.
Junior Katherine Acocella blasted a two-run homer in the bottom of the fifth and walked and scored three time while senior co-captain Emma Traggianese drilled a run scoring double, singled and hit a sacrifice fly to drive in three runs.

The Falcons (2-0) recorded their second win in as many outings this spring.
Junior Olivia Ventricelli also contributed at the plate with a pair of singles and walks, as Barlow managed timely hitting in turning back the Lancers, now 0-2 on the season.

Sophomore starter Morgan Bonis teamed up with junior ace Anne Dolan 1-0) in holding Notre Dame to five hits. They combined to strike out six strike while yielding only two walks as they stymied the Lancers' bats.
Defensively, the Falcons were near perfect. Senior co-captain Sonia Giorgio did a masterful job behind the plate while Traggianese was solid at third and Acocella tracked five putouts in center.
Barlow is off to a great start this spring under first year head coach Kristen Fallo. The Falcons resume play this Saturday with a home game versus the Wilton Warriors at 3 p.m.in a non-league contest.
