A few years ago, the CIAC introduced an option allowing high school football teams in the state to forego traditional spring practice to start their summer practice a week earlier.

Teams could chose one or the other but not both. A total of 69 schools, including Barlow, opted for the latter. That means the Falcons will start conditioning on Tuesday and conduct their first formal practice on Aug. 22.

Here is a list of SWC schools, according to the CIAC, who will get things going on Tuesday:

Wednesday, August 31 vs St Joseph, 4 p.m.

Thursday, September 8 vs Westhill, 5 p.m.

Ten-year-old Westonites Samantha Kim and Charlotte Proceller recently qualified for the Long Course Eastern Zone team and will represent Connecticut and the Eastern Zone swimming championships Wednesday-Sunday at Penn State University.

The zone championship features top regional swimmers competing in their age level within Eastern, Central, Southern, and Western United States zones.

The Eastern Zone is comprised of eleven local swimming committees including Adirondack, Allegheny Mountain, Connecticut, Maryland, Maine, Metropolitan, Middle Atlantic, New England, New Jersey, Niagara, Potomac Balley and Virginia.

Proceller has been on Weston Swimming for two years with a special focus on shortening her long course times. This is Kim’s second season with the organization and the upcoming championship is taking place in her grandparent’s home town.

This summer, both incoming fifth-graders reached their sought-after zone qualification goals. In order to make the Long Course Season Zone team, Kim and Proceller had to achieve two or more long course meter qualification times in different events.

Samantha qualified for the 50-meter breast stroke, 100-meter breaststroke and the 200-meter freestyle while Charlotte qualified for the 50-meter butterfly and 50-meter freestyle.
