Weston-Barlow Scores And Standings: Feb. 3

The boys hockey team clinched a state tournament berth with an 8-4 victory over Shepaug-Litchfield-Nonnewaug on Wednesday at The Gunnery Rink.

Michael Mattson led the way with a six-point night, scoring three goals and three assists for the Falcons. Patrick Callahan and Justin MacDougall each scored twice with Callahan adding a pair of assists.

Dino Cirino had the other goal for Barlow (8-3), which led 3-1 after the first period and 5-3 after two.

Thierry Jean recorded 17 saves for the Falcos, who clinched a state tournament berth for the fifth consecutive season.

Barlow, who has won threee straight after losing three in a row, will be back in action on Saturday when it hosts Sheehan at the Danbury Ice Arena (2:50 p.m). The Falcons are fourth in the Division III rankings.

The Weston girls basketball team suffered a 56-47 loss to Kollbe Cathedral on Thursday in Bridgeport.

It was the third straight loss for the Trojans, who dropped to 6-10. Weston needs to split its four remaining games to make the state tournament, starting with Saturday's non-league contest against Haddam-Killingworth.

Ellie Martin scored 22 points for Weston and Taylor Swanson and Lianna Hursch added 11 apiece. Martin also grabbed 13 rebounds.

After taking a 14-13 lead after the first quarter, the Cougars outscored the Trojans 14-7 in the second period to open a 28-20 advantage at the half.

Weston climbed 38-36 after three, but Kolbe Cathedral held on by outscoring the Trojans 18-11 over the final eight minutes.

After clinching a state tournament berth in its previous game, the Weston boys basketball team gets to host undefeated Kolbe Cathedral on Friday (7 p.m.)

The Trojans defeated Pomperaug 52-49 on Tuesday to improve to 8-6. Kolbe Cathedral is 15-0 after a 64-49 victory over Stratford on Wednesday.

The Barlow boys will be looking to stap a two-game slide on Friday when they host Bunnell (7 p.m.). The Falcons suffered a 69-62 loss to New Milford on Tuesday to fall to 6-9.

On the girls side, Barlow goes for its seventh straight win at Bunnell (7 p.m.). The Falcons improved to 11-5 with Tuesday's 43-28 victory over New Milford.

The deadline for the Connecticut Sports Writers’ Alliance Bohdan Kolinsky Memorial Journalism Scholarship is Monday, Feb. 6.

The scholarship is open to Connecticut high school seniors who aspire to careers in sports journalism. Named for the longtime scholastic sports editor of the Hartford Courant who passed away in 2003, the award provides the winner $1,000 for freshman-year college study and a chance to receive increased aid in succeeding years by meeting certain standards
