Weston-Barlow Sports Roundup: Feb. 6

The girls placed second and the Weston boys finished third Saturday at the SWC indoor track championships at the Floyd Little Athletic Center in New Haven.  Immaculate took the girls title and Newtown won the boys championship.

The Weston girls finished second in the 4x200 relay and third in the 4x400 relay and 1,600 sprint medley relay.

Individually, Weston's Emily Savage won the long jump with a leap of 17 feet, 2 inches and she also took the high jump. Her leap of four feet, 10 inches in the high jump was two inches better than teammate Tess Fagan, the runner-up.

Savage also finished second in the pole vault (17-0), just behind Newtown's Lauren O'Connell.

The Weston boys finished second in the 4x400 relay, the 4x800 and 1,600 sprint medley.

Individually, Weston's David Stankiewicz won the 1,000 meters (2:39.05), finishing almost two seconds ahead of Barlow's Logan Fulton (2:40.87).

Weston also got a win in the shot put from Larry Cass, whose leap of 43 feet, 4.5 inches was more than a foot longer than runner-up Trevor Ochs of Bethel (42-4).

Weston's Jensen Frost finished third in the 600 meters (1:26.88) and Nick Dibarthalomeo was third in the pole vault (11-0).

The Barlow girls and the boys each finished ninth.

Barlow's Alexandra Bender was third in the 55-meter hurdles (9.37) while Shea Barickman (43.53) finished second in the 300 meters.

For the Barlow boys, Austin Sunlof was second in the 55-meter hurdles (7.95).

Patrick Callahan and Michael Mattson were a two-man show for the Barlow boys hockey team on Saturday.

They each had three goals and three assists to lead the Falcons to a 6-3 victory over Sheehan at the Danbury Ice Arena.

Charlie Berry and Patrick Mimms each added two helps for Barlow, which won its fourth straight game to improve to 9-3.

Thierry Jean made 30 saves for the Falcons, who broke open a 2-2 game by outscoring the Titans 4-1 in the third period.

The injury-depleted Staples-Weston-Shelton boys hockey team suffered a 10-1 loss to Trinity Catholic on Saturday at the Milford Ice Pavilion.

It was the sixth straight loss for the Wreckers, who dropped to 6-7. And it doesn't get any easy as S-W-S plays at New Canaan on Wednesday.

The boys basketball team was no match for undefeated Kolbe Cathedral on Friday.

Shaquille Thomas scored 17 points and D.J. Perry added 16 as the Cougars coasted to an 82-55 victory in Weston.

Cosrick McDonald added 15 for Kolbe Cathedral, which improved to 16-0, while Weston dropped to 8-7.

Lyle Mitchell scored 19 points and Evan Blitzer added 15 for Weston. Max Molinsky chipped in with 11 points, five rebounds and three steals.

After opening a 17-9 lead following the first period, the Cougars were outscored 20-19 in the second period as the Trojans pulled within 36-29 at the half.

However, Kolbe Cathedral outscored Weston 42-26 in the second half to turn the contest into a rout.

The Barlow boys basketball team suffered a tough 64-62 setback to Bunnell on Friday.

Joey Greenspan had 23 points and 14 rebounds for the Falcons, who dropped to 6-10 and must split their final four games to make the state tournament.

The Falcons had four players in double figures as Jake Lightman scored 14, Phil Moriber 12 and Nolan Stauffer 11. However, they combined for all two of Barlow's points as the Falcons got no bench scoring.

Tim White scored 15 points to lead Bunnell, which improved to 9-6. Matt Nolting, Ryan Pittman and Carmine Santorelli each added 10 for the Bulldogs.

Brittany Dumas had a double-double with 14 points and 12 rebounds as the Barlow girls basketball team defeated Bunnell 60-43 on Friday.

Sarah McAniff paced the Falcons with 16 points and Drew Bartro added 11.

It was the seventh consecutive win for Barlow, which improved to 12-5 with three games left in the regular season.

The Falcons opened a 21-14 lead after the first quarter and maintained a 33-26 edge at the half.

Bunnell pulled within 41-38 after three, but Barlow put away the game by outscoring the Bulldogs 19-5 over the final eight minutes.

Jessica Bogdwicz scored 13 points and Erin Koletar added 11 for the Bulldogs, who dropped to 9-8.

The Weston girls basketball team dropped to 6-11 following Saturday's 45-35 loss to Haddam-Killingworth.

Ellie Martin had 11 points and 13 rebounds for the Trojans, who suffered their fourth straight loss and need to win two of their remaining three games to make the state tournament.

Lianna Hursch added 10 points for Weston, which battled H-K to a 17-17 tie at halftime before faltering in the second half.

The visitors took control with a 19-6 spurt in the third quarter to open a 36-23 lead entering the final period.
