Weston-Barlow Scores And Standings: Jan. 9

The boys hockey team matched the best start in school history Saturday when the Falcons defeated Housatonic Valley Co-op 5-1 at the Danbury Arena.

The undefeated Falcons improved to 5-0 and will look to set the school mark on Wednesday against Division II Newtown at the Danbury Arena at 6:40 p.m.

The Falcons took the lead in the first period Saturday with the only goal of the frame. Some great passing down low ended with Michael Mattson finding the net. Pat Callahan and Patrick Mimms assisted on the goal.

In the second period, the Falcons extended the lead when Jack Cartafalsa scored on a breakaway. Time Eng and Dan Cirino each had assists.

After surrendering a goal to make the score 2-1, the Falcons pushed the lead back to two when Cirino scored his first goal for Barlow on a rebound from Chris Van Camp's breakaway.

Barlow scored twice more in the third. Charlie Berry scored his first high school goal (Eng and Callahan assisted) and Van Camp found the back of the net (Cartafalsa and Eng assisted) to complete the scoring.

Thierry Jean (20 saves) and Alex Dolcimascolo (3 saves) combined to make 23 saves for the Falcons. The duo has allowed only four goals all season.

Max Molinsky just missed a triple-double as the Weston boys basketball team rolled to a 66-49 victory over Masuk on Friday.

Molinsky had 14 points, 10 rebounds and nine assists for the Trojans, who improved to 6-1.  Lyle Mitchell pulled down 14 rebounds for Weston and J.D. Simons added 12 points.

Weston jumped out to a 20-9 first-quarter lead and never looked back. The Panthers pulled within 27-20 at the half, but the Trojans put away the contest with a 20-11 burst in the third quarter.

Matthew Gerak had 25 points for Masuk, which slipped to 3-4.

The Barlow boys team suffered a 64-39 loss to Notre Dame of Fairfield, which dismissed two players -- senior Tre McPherson and freshman Marcus Blackwell from the team.

Nolan Stauffer scored 11 points and Jake Lightman added 10 for the Falcons, who dropped to 3-5.

Barlow jumped out to a 19-9 lead after the first quarter but managed just 29 points over the final three quarters.

Notre Dame outscored the Falcons 18-2 in the second period to take a 27-21 halftime lead.

Donte Peeler scored 17 points to pace the Lancers. Danny Upchurch added 13 and Arkel Miles chipped in with 12 for Notre Dame (5-3), which snapped a two-game losing streak.

After a slow start, the Weston girls basketball team is starting to build some momentum.

Ellie Martin had a monster game with 24 points and 16 rebounds as the Falcons defeated Masuk 49-43 in overtime Friday.

Lianna Hirsch added 11 points for Weston, which outscored Masuk 8-2 in the overtime after the Panthers made a huge comeback in the fourth quarter.

Masuk outscored the Trojans 22-6 over the final eight minutes to erase a 16-point deficit and force the extra period.

After an 0-4 start, the Trojans have won three of their last five to improve to 3-5.

Michelle Wu and Lauren Maile each scored 13 points for the Panthers.

Bianka Bell scored 17 points as the Notre Dame of Fairfield girls basketball team climbed over .500 with a 44-41 victory over Barlow.

Aly Furgiuele added 11 points for the Lancers, who improved to 4-3.

Notre Dame trailed 32-29 after three quarters but outscored the Falcons 15-9 over the final eight minutes to earn the win.

Brittney Dumas scored 10 points and Drew Barto added 15 for Barlow, which dropped to 5-4.
