The Easton-Redding United Soccer Club's U12 Pride "Rockets" combined ball control, aggressive attacks and solid defense to place second in the annual Nutmeg Girls Soccer Tournament this past weekend on fields throughout Wilton.

The event, celebrating its' 30th year, featured talented travel clubs from the tri-state area and is an event regularly attended by the ERU soccer program.

The Rockets are a South West District "A" team, coached by skills specialist Dee Agoora of Bethel.  They finished the weekend with a record of 2-0-2, scoring six goals and allowing only two against solid competition.

ERU opened the weekend with a 1-1 draw against the Stamford Hurricanes in a game that was controlled on both sides of the field by the Rockets.

A hand ball in the ERU scoring box resulted in a penalty-kick goal early in the match, but that the only real scoring opportunity Stamford had as the Rockets continued to control play.  Carolyn Lenoci knotted the score solid rising shot over the goalie off a pass from Kristen Acocella in the second half.

Game two was totally dominated by ERU as it cruised to a 2-0 shutout of the SCOR Black of Ridgefield as all play was managed in the opponent's end of the field. Shannon Gilbert scored on a breakaway and Acocella - off a cross from Olivia Greif-  added the insurance goal in the contest.

The Rockets equaled the attack on Wilton White in a 2-0 victory to notch their second win of the tourney.

Greif scored on an up-close indirect, the result of the Wilton keeper touching a pass from a White defender. Acocella added the second goal off a play started by Katarina Hackel to Greif, who assisted on the goal.

The toughest match of the weekend resulted in a 1-1 draw with eventual tournament champion Wilton White.  The first half was a tough back and forth contest with both teams displaying solid passing and strong defense.

Both scores occurred later in the match as Wilton scored on a breakaway which  appeared to be an offside play missed by the line judge as the attacker got in behind Jessie Matsuoka to beat Jenny Alix for the score.

The Rockets had several attempts on goal throughout the match, just missing each time.  Acocella stole the ball from the point and drilled the goalie late in the game to knot the score as the Rockets were guaranteed the second position in the tournament field.

Solid performances were turned in by goakeepers Greif, Matsuoka, Gilbert, Alix and Lily Taueber, who turned back all but two shots on the weekend.

Acocella scored three goals and had one assist, Greif scored one and provided two assists along with goals by Lenoci and Gilbert.

The Rockets will now regroup with tryouts for the fall season coming up this week and will move into the U-13 Division of the SWD this fall.
