Senior co-captain Samantha Macchio found the back of the net 6 1/2 minutes into overtime Monday as the Joel Barlow field hockey team won its' second consecutive CIAC overtime game with a 2-1 victory over host and third-seeded Avon.

The win avenged a double-overtime match that ended in penalty strokes three seasons ago when Avon ended the Falcons' run in the first round.

Avon (16-2) was the prohibitive favorite coming into the match, but someone forgot to tell the locals as they came out agressive and played a solid ball-control game early in the contest.

Avon keeper Tori Sonlin demonstrated skills that resulted in 11 shutouts this season while Barlow junior keeper Samantha Scavo was every bit as sharp, having recorded nine shutouts during the fall campaign.

Barlow scored first midway through the first half as senior co-captain Katherine Acocella moved the ball around the Avon defense and drilled a shot which was deflected into the net by a well-positioned sophomore attacker Kerianne Gibney, who recorded her first goal of the CIAC playoffs.

The host Falcons answered the call late in the first half as the Avon attackers deflected a shot into the upper right corner, just out of reach from Scavo's glove to end the half knotted at 1-1.

Barlow controlled much of the play in the second half, but a game Avon squad kept the favored hosts in the match while Barlow's energy mounted as the game progressed.

Despite a number of Barlow runs. Avon made two quick runs at Barlow early in the overtime, but Scavo, supported by senior defenders Rose Fenwick and Erin Sullivan along with junior Colleen Yost in the middle, turned back the home team.

Barlow took over the match from there.  Senior co-captains Anne Dolan in mid and Brittany Lofgren on attack joined Macchio and Acocella in forcing Avon back on its heels as Barlow continued its' assault on the overmatched hosts.

With four minutes left, Acocella and Logren attacked the goal.  Acocella's shot rebounded out right and was met by Macchio, who drilled home the game-winner as the traveling Falcons' faithful erupted in cheers.

Barlow improved to 15-3-2, but its work is not done.  Next are the semifinals, scheduled for Wednesday evening against the seventh-seeded Branford (15-4-3-1) in a rematch of last year's first round CIAC match, won by Branford.

The Falcons are about as close as a high school sports team can be, led by sixth-year head coach Erika Profenno who has this team clicking on all cylinders as the semifinals approach.

Tuesday's practice session will be held on turf in order to prepare for the semifinal site, which was announced as Fairfield Ludlowe at 6 p.m.

Also on Monday, the Barlow volleyball team advanced to the Class M semifinals with a 3-0 (25-20, 25-14, 25-7) win over Nonnewaug while the Falcons' girls soccer team takes on Bethel in a Class L quarterfinal on Tuesday.

Barlow athletic director Mike Santangeli said this is about as successful a fall season that the Falcons have enjoyed in some time

After receiving a bye in the first round, Barlow's fourth-seeded girls soccer team blanked No. 20 Woodstock Academy 2-0 in Saturday.

Bethel defeated No. 21 Wilbur Cross in the first round 3-1, then ousted No. 5 seed Guilford 2-1 on penalty kicks.

In the regular season, Barlow and Bethel battled to a 2-2 draw on Sept. 27.

The winner of Tuesday's contest takes on either No. 8 Farmington or No. 17 Brookfield in the semifinals on Friday.

The Barlow girls volleyball team will face e Lauralton Hall in the semifinals on Wednesday at a site to be determined.

Last year, Barlow lost to RHAM 3-1 (16-25 25-22 25-12 28-26) in the Class M state finals.
