The Joel Barlow High School varsity field hockey team's run to a CIAC Class M championship fell short at the hands of the seventh seeded Branford Hornets, 2-0 in front of a vocal crowd at Fairfield Ludlowe High School on Thursday night.
Branford opened the scoring early in the match off a corner and out of the reach of standout goalie Samantha Scavo and it was uphill for the Falcons for the balance of the match.

The guest Hornets dominated play in the center of the field, limiting Barlow's offense and frustrating the Falcons' attackers for the entire match as Branford adjusted its' defense and the locals were unable to get the ball to the outside forwards where they've realized such success this season.
Barlow was able to muster a few runs but failed to use the entire field, limiting scoring opportunities and control of the field.

The Falcons defense stood strong as it has all season, led by seniors Rose Fenwick and Erin Sullivan, along with junior Colleen Yost, who helped keep the team in the match until late in the game.
Branford converged on a push that put the contest out of reach and vaulted a jubilant Hornets' squad into the Class M finals where they will meet the fourth seeded Wilton Warriors, who upset the top seeded Darien Blue Wave 3-2 in an overtime match played at New Canaan High School.
Barlow, 15-4-2 finishes its' most successful season in two decades, and will regroup next year under Erika Profenno, who in her six years at Barlow has built the program into one of the most formidable forces in the state, taking this solid group of athletes and turning them into an SWC and Class M power.
The Barlow girls volleyball team has made it make to the Class M state final for the second consecutive year.
Victoria Shea recorded 21 service points and seven digs for the second-seeded Falcons, who defeated No. 3 Lauralton Hall 3-1 (25-22, 25-10, 23-25, 25-14) in the semifinals on Wednesday.
Maddy Kominski chipped in with 17 service points and 12 digs for the Falcons while Sarah McAniff added 17 digs and 11 kills.
