The Barlow High School varsity field hockey team will be Playing 4 the Cure on Friday at 7 p.m. against Newtown at the Joel Barlow stadium field.

The Falcons will wear pink jerseys and use a pink ball to support breast cancer research while honoring those who have battled this disease.. In addition, the team will be selling baked goods and pink bracelets. Funds raised will go to the Susan G. Komen foundation and the American Cancer Society.

The Play 4 the Cure movement was created by Mystx Field Hockey Club founder, director and head coach Tina Reinprecht in Feastervile,
Pennsylvania in 2006. The benefit was dedicated to mothers of players in the Mystx FH Club who fought the fight against breast cancer.

Play 4 the Cure states that breast cancer affects one out of every
eight women in the United States. The Susan G. Komen for the Cure
states that in 2011 it is estimated that among U.S. women there will
be 230,480 new cases of invasive breast cancer and there will be
39,520 breast cancer deaths.

Redding's Charlie Morton, who is coming off the best season of his four-year major league career, underwent surgery Monday to repair a torn labrum in his left hip, the Pittsburgh Pirates announced.

Morton's agent, Andrew Lowenthal, told the Pittsburgh Post Gazette that Morton hopes to be fully recovered in four months. The Pirates said that typical recovery time for this  type of injury is six months.

"We have every indication he'll be ready for the season," Lowenthal said,  adding he believed Morton might even be able to participate in some baseball  activity sooner than four months.

According to the Post Gazette, the injury bothered Morton late in the season and he did not disclose the problem to reporters. Dr. Thomas Byrd performed the surgery in Nashville.

The former Barlow star set career highs in innings and appearances this past season, posting a 10-10 record with a 3.83 ERA in 29 starts for the Pirates.
