The Joel Barlow field hockey team celebrated Senior Night with a convincing 3-0 rout of visiting Newtown on Tuesday at Barlow Stadium.

The pre-game energy generated from the Seniors' ceremony carried onto the field as the Falcons dominated the Nighthawks from the opening whistle. Newtown demonstrated solid athletic skills throughout the contest, but it was no match for Barlow's offensive attack and the Falcons' stingy defense.

Sophomore Kerianne Gibney opened the scoring in the first half off an assist from senior co-captain Brittany Lofgren midway through the first half.

Senior co-captain Katherine Acocella iced the match in the second half by drilling home a cross into the Newtown cage and the celebration was on. Gibney followed with an encore goal to end the scoring late in the match.

Barlow was led by the seniors on their night. Senior co-captains Samantha Macchio, Lofgren, Acocella and middie Anne Dolan displayed skill and ball control throughout the contest in front of the lively crowd of cheering family and friends of the upperclassman.

Senior midfielder Izzy Hermantin and the defense, anchored by fellow seniors Erin Sullivan, Rose Fenwick and Liz Sniffen, turned back Newtown's attempts into the Barlow zone throughout the match. Junior goalkeeper Samantha Scavo was perfect in goal again for the hosts, recording her ninth shutout of the season.

Sixth year head coach Erika Profenno reflected on the regular season as she addressed the Barlow supporters following the match.

"We have had a great season and I am very proud of what has been the best group of seniors I've coached during my time at Barlow," she said. "They have led this team through hard work and have demonstrated solid leadership in getting us to where we are today."

Profenno added that more hard work is ahead and summoned up the Barlow fans to support the team during the post

The Falcons are 12-2-2 as they prepare for the start of the postseason playoffs. Barlow has earned the No. 2 seed in the SWC tournament and will host seventh seeded Newtown on Friday at 4 p.m. in a rematch of Tuesday's contest.

Lauralton Hall earned the top seed, despite having been shut out by Barlow in two matches this season, a 2-0 loss and a 0-0 draw.

The Falcons completed the regular season with a No. 6 ranking in the CIAC Class M division. The state tournament begins after the SWC playoffs.
