Weston-Barlow Sports Roundup: Feb. 23

The Staples-Weston-Shelton boys hockey team clinched a state tournament berth a 5-3 win over Greenwich on Wednesday.

After starting 6-1, the Wreckers were decimated by injuries and lost 10 in a row, but they have won two straight to improve to 8-11 after getting sone of their walking wounded back.

S-W-S hosts Cheshire on Saturday in its final regular-season game of the season.

The 13th-seed girls basketball team (13-7) has earned a home game in the first round of the Class L state tournament and will host No. 20 Fitch (11-9) on Tuesday.

The winner of that game will face No. 4 seed Berlin (17-3) in the second round on Thursday. The Redcoats received first-round bye

Weston (8-12) is the 30th seed in Class M and plays at No. 3 Ellington (18-2) in the first round on Monday.

Should the Trojans spring the upset, they would face either No. 14 Trinity Catholic or No. 19 Kolbe Cathedral in the second round on Wednesday.
