Despite a 10-game losing streak, the Staples-Weston-Shelton boys hockey team recovered in time to qualify for postseason play and is the No. 10 seed in the Division II state tournament.

The Wreckers, who won their final three games to finish at 9-11 after getting many of their walking wounded back, will play at No. 7 seed Branford (11-9) in the first round on Tuesday. The contest is set for 7 p.m. at the Northford Pavilion.

Should Staples advance, it would take on either on No. 2 seed Hand (12-6-2) in the quarterfinals. Hand earned a bye in the first round.

Guilford (11-7-2) is the top seed while North Branford (11-8-1) in the No. 3 seed and Wilton (10-10) the No. 4 seed

The Wreckers moved up to Division II after losing to Watertown-Pomperaug 4-0 in last year's Division III state final.

Staples started this season 6-1 before the injury bug hit. During the losing streak, the Wreckers dressed as few as 10 skaters for some games.
