WESTON, CT — The 2019 municipal election is heating up in Weston and there are plenty of races with candidates eager to serve in elected office.

Weston Patch asked candidates to answer questions about their campaigns and will be publishing candidate profiles as election day draws near.

Greg Murphy, a resident of Weston since 2002, is running for election to the Board of Finance as a Republican. He is a private wealth advisor at Bank of America Private Bank with over 30 years of experience in banking and bond strategy and trading. He is currently a member of the National Board of Directors of the Hypertrophic Cardiomyopathy Association.

Locally, Murphy has been an active volunteer at Our Lady of Fatima School, St. Francis of Assisi Parish, Weston Youth Sports, Weston Memorial Day Race, Easton Exchange Club and the Westport Historical Society.

Murphy warns against a "dual threat" to Weston: increased spending and Hartford politicians. Specifically, he cites:

• The 6 percent decline in Weston’s Grand List reflects the hard financial reality that Weston must face. This decline required a comparable hike in Weston’s taxes just to maintain current spending levels and leaves no room for increased spending. Yet Weston has continued to increase school spending despite lower student enrollment. If we chose to increase town and school spending again next year, higher taxes will follow.
• Hartford’s continuing efforts to thrust more unfunded mandates and other financial obligations upon the towns represent a real threat.
• My goal is to work together on the Board of Finance to cap town and school spending at current levels and fight the efforts of Hartford politicians to raid our surplus.
