WESTON SIDEWALKS

I have become aware of information being disseminated to local residents that states that the Town has no right to construct sidewalks along Old Hyde Road. I am releasing this statement to set the record straight and to refute some of the statements and implications that have surfaced.

First and foremost, there is evidence of the Town’s right to construct sidewalks adjacent to the paved portion of Old Hyde Road. The Town’s analysis has been confirmed by representatives of the State (acting through the Department of Transportation) and by the Town Attorney’s office.

That evidence includes the following key facts:

  • Maps and surveys that date back many years and show the width of the Old Hyde Road Right of Way to be at least 50 feet wide.
  • The Town has utilized the area where the sidewalks will be located for many years. Part of the Town’s drainage system, including catch basis and drainage pipes exist on the surface and under the ground where the sidewalk will be located.
  • The Town has maintained, when needed, the area between the edge of the pavement and the deeded front boundary lines of many of the properties on Old Hyde Road.
  • Finally, property owners along Old Hyde Road pay property taxes based on the legal descriptions in their deeds, which all show the front property lines to be 10 to 15 feet away from the paved portion of Old Hyde Road.
  • There has been overwhelming support of the “sidewalk project” and I believe it is an important and worthwhile project to see through to completion.
