Weston Man Charged With Identity Theft: Westport Police

Police said a Weston man is accused of using a person's identity to acquire a credit card, then claimed the charges were fraudulent.

WESTPORT, CT — A Weston man accused of using a Westport resident's identity to acquire a credit card, then claiming the charges were fraudulent, was arrested last week, according to police.

In a news release, Police Lt. Dave Wolf said the conservator of a Westport resident told police in October she was reviewing the resident's finances and noticed high balances on some credit cards from charges that were not made by the resident.

After a lengthy investigation, police determined Carter King, 33, of Weston, obtained an American Express Card using the resident's personal identifying information and incurred a high balance, Wolf said.

Unable to pay the balance, King contacted American Express and disputed the charges, saying they were fraudulent "even though he knew that was not true," Wolf said. American Express ultimately forgave the balance on the card.

King was arrested Feb. 24 on a warrant and released after posting a $100,000 bond, Wolf said. He was charged with first-degree identity theft, second-degree larceny, third-degree identity theft, trafficking in personal identifying information and unlawful possession of personal identifying information device.
