Weston Man Crashed His Truck, Then Reported It Stolen: Police

The accident caused utility poles to break and fall across the roadway, as well as the primary power lines to come down.

WESTON, CT — Police charged a Weston man with crashing his truck into a couple of utility poles, and later reporting it stolen.

Wilton police responded to the report of a crash on Dec. 20 at approximately 9 p.m. They found a Chevy Silverado truck that had been travelling north on Cannon Road past the intersection with
Sturges Ridge Road had run off the road, struck two utility poles, and continued approximately 30
yards until it came to rest. The accident caused the utility poles to break and fall across the roadway as well as the primary power lines to come down, police said.

It was unsafe for police to approach the truck until it was secured by Eversource and firefighters. Once the scene was secured, police discovered that the truck was unoccupied.

While investigating the accident, the Wilton Police Department received a 911 call from the truck's owner, William Pilato of Whippoorwill Lane. Pilato told police his truck had been stolen earlier in the evening from a restaurant parking lot. Pilato repeated that story to detectives who interviewed him later at his residence, saying that he waited to get home before calling 911 to report his truck stolen.

Following further investigation, police say that Pilato provided a written statement documenting that he was in fact driving his truck at the time of the accident, left the scene without reporting it, called 911, falsely reported his truck stolen, and falsely reported his truck stolen again to detectives at his residence.
