On Your Mark: 29th Annual Weston 5k Memorial Day Race Kicks Off May 27

WESTON, CT — The 29th Annual Weston 5k Memorial Day Road Race will be held Saturday, May 27.

The competition, a key component of the town's Memorial Day Weekend festivities, returned last year after a 2-year hiatus.

Registration for the 5K Run/Walk, 5K Student Run, and 1-Mile Kids Fun Run is online here. The race is the biggest fundraiser for the Weston High School Parent Teacher Organization, and all proceeds fund enhancements for the school.

Over 600 runners registered for the race last year, according to Nancy Kirwan-Hayden, one of the race organizers.

The weekend activities kick off Friday night of the Memorial Day weekend, with a fair organized by Weston Intermediate School and Hurlbutt Elementary School that will continue through Monday. That's when the Annual Weston Memorial Day Parade, organized by the Weston Volunteer Fire Department, will step off.

"It's really the biggest weekend in Weston for everyone to come out, they have huge picnics at the fair where the bands are playing," Kirwan-Hayden said. "Your entire weekend is basically taken care of: You have fun for the whole weekend and get your exercise in."

You'll need it. New race-side this year will be a food truck, The Granola Bar, which, despite its deceptively healthy-sounding name, is probably best known for its parfaits and carne asada tacos.

The 5K Run will start in front of the high school at 8:30 Saturday morning; the 5K Walk begins at 8:35 am.

Competitors may pick up their bibs and t-shirts at the following times: May 25, 3 pm - 6 pm; May 26, 3 pm - 6 pm; and May 27 (Race Day) from 7 am to 8:30 am. Pick up is in the Weston High School Cafeteria (entrance by flagpole, follow the signs).
