WESTPORT, CT — A 22-year-old Westport man was arrested on a warrant last week on two counts of assault on a public safety employee, after Westport police said he attacked and injured two officers who were trying to him into custody last month.

Officers found the man had locked himself in his bedroom, and determined that he "was having some sort of mental health emergency," Westport police wrote in a statement.

After talking to him for an undisclosed amount of time, officers were able to get into the bedroom, but then found the man in the bathroom.

As the officers began to escort the man out of the bathroom, "he began swinging at officers and a struggle ensued."

The officers were able to subdue him, but not before two officers "sustained minor injuries to their faces and upper bodies during the struggle."

Authorities took the man to the hospital for evaluation, and the warrant was obtained for his arrest on the felony charge.

He was released after posting bond on bail of $50,000, and is scheduled to appear in Stamford Superior Court on March 9.
