Absentee Ballots To Be Recounted In Westport 2019 Election

Two races remain very close and will be finalized by the recanvass.

WESTPORT, CT — With two races from Tuesday's election too close to officially call, Westport Registrars of Voters Marla Cowden and Richard Ruggiano and election officials this weekend will conduct a recount of absentee ballots which were hand counted.

The recanvass is scheduled for 10 a.m. on Saturday in Room 201 in Westport Town Hall. The public is welcome to attend.

Following Tuesday's election, Representative Town Meeting District 3 candidate Ross Burkhardt leads Arline P. Gertzoff by one vote, 292 to 291. And on the Board of Education, incumbent Republican Vik Muktavaram leads fellow Republican Liz Heyer by 29 votes, 3,481 to 3,452.

"We have an RTM race and the Board of Education race that are either close or within the 20 vote margin that triggers a recanvass," Democratic Registrar of Voters Marla Cowden told Patch on Friday. "The recanvass was not requested. It was determined in the normal course of the election as specified in Connecticut State Statutes."
