You Can Get a Personal Trainer at the Westport-Weston Family Y
Yale-bound All-American Edward Stolarski, a Fairfield Prep student, takes his swimming to a new level with a personal trainer.
Fairfield Prep Senior Edward Stolarski has been swimming competitively since age 7. The 17-year-old Westonite is the third generation of a Connecticut swimming dynasty.
His late grandmother Marie Corridon Mortell won gold for the American team at the 1948 Summer Olympic Games in London. In 2011, Edward’s mother, Sheila Stolarski, won six gold medals at the YMCA Masters National Championships.
Edward, a scholar-athlete and All-American swimmer at Prep, has supplemented his training program with dry-land strength and conditioning custom designed by Matthias, a Certified Personal Trainer at the Westport Weston Family YMCA. This focused young athlete works out with Matthias at least twice a week, arriving at the Family YMCA’s new facility at its Mahackeno campus as the doors open at 5:30 am for a one-hour session before school.

Edward is a versatile swimmer who competes in all four strokes as well as the individual medley. Next week he will be competing against elite swimmers from across the country at the YMCA Nationals in Greensboro, N.C., swimming in the 100 Breaststroke, 200 Backstroke, 200 IM and 400 IM events.
Each stroke has improved with his training with Matthias. In the sport of swimming, the underwater aspect of competition has become increasingly important when competing on the national level.

“Personal training with Matthias has taken my underwater abilities to a new level,” says Edward. “When I step behind the block, I know I have an edge over my competition.” Edward’s hard work, combined with Matthias’ dry-land conditioning, has paid off: Edward has been recruited to swim for Yale University this fall.
Matthias and his fellow Personal Trainers at the Family YMCA are certified to teach proper form and technique in all exercises. Consistent, proper form will both prevent injury and maximize effectiveness in your training, whatever your age, current level of fitness or individual wellness goals.
