Allegedly Drunk Westporter Rearends, Injures Moped Rider: Police

The incident occurred on Aug. 9 on the Post Road East.

WESTPORT, CT — A 57-year-old Westport resident was arrested on charges of Operating Under the Influence and Following Too Close on Aug. 9 after his car rearended a moped on the Post Road East, injuring the rider, according to police.

Donald Fries is accused of striking the moped as it was stopped at a red light at about 11 p.m. The moped rider, who was not identified, received minor injuries.

Responding officers smelled alcohol on Fries' breath "and noticed that his eyes were glassy and bloodshot." He allegedly failed roadside sobriety tests.

"Once at police headquarters, Mr. Fries submitted to a Breathalyzer Test and the results were .204 for the first test and .199 for the second," police wrote in a statement.

Fries was released after posting a $500 bond and is scheduled to appear in court on Aug. 22.
