WESTPORT, CT — Clarendon Fine Art in Westport will present a new exhibition beginning Thursday by Mr Brainwash titled Homage to Van Gogh, the gallery announced.
The exhibition features works that reinterpret the visual language of Vincent van Gogh through a mix of street art, pop culture, and art historical references. The exhibition will be on view in the gallery’s Westport location, at 22 Main St., from April 23 through May 3.
A reception with Mr Brainwash is scheduled for Thursday evening. See below.
Clarendon Fine Art, which operates galleries in the United Kingdom including Mayfair, Chelsea, and Oxford, as well as spaces aboard Cunard and Explora Journeys ocean liners, opened its first U.S. location in Westport in 2023 and plans to expand with a second site in Wellesley, Massachusetts, later this year. The gallery’s program spans 20th-century artists and contemporary works, with an emphasis on curated collecting.
"This exhibition marks a defining moment for Clarendon as we continue to establish our presence in the U.S.," said Rebecca Ball, Chief Commercial Officer, in a statement. "Since opening in Westport, our ambition has been to introduce collectors to artists who bridge cultural relevance and art historical significance. Mr Brainwash’s Homage to Van Gogh exemplifies that vision, bringing a fresh and dynamic perspective to one of the most revered figures in art history."
Mr Brainwash, born Thierry Guetta, gained international attention following his appearance in the Academy Award-nominated documentary Exit Through the Gift Shop by Banksy. His work blends references from art history, music, film, and popular culture, often combining graffiti-style elements with familiar imagery.
In Homage to Van Gogh, the artist draws on Van Gogh’s recognizable motifs—including sunflowers, night skies, and interior scenes—while incorporating pop art imagery and contemporary references. The resulting works juxtapose historical and modern influences.
"I’m looking at the past, and I’m taking from the past, but I’m also bringing something new back to give it another way of being. But always with appreciation and respect," said Mr Brainwash.
Featured pieces include Sunflowers Reimagined, which revisits one of Van Gogh’s most well-known subjects; Starry Nights, Hollywood, which combines imagery associated with Provence and Los Angeles; and Once Upon a Dream, an interior composition that merges elements from multiple Van Gogh works into a single scene.
