WESTPORT, CT — Traffic will be diverted in part of Westport this summer to accommodate the bridge replacement project on Cross Highway over Dead Man's Brook, Town Engineer Keith Wilberg announced.
The bridge is located on Cross Highway about 800 feet east of North Avenue. Preliminary construction work is underway, and through traffic will continue to have access to the road until a scheduled closure on or about Friday, June 19.
Cross Highway is expected to remain closed through about Aug. 20 while crews install a new bridge structure.
During the closure, local traffic will be detoured using Cross Highway, Bayberry Lane, Long Lots Road and North Avenue, depending on travel direction. Town officials said detour and safety signs will be installed before the closure begins. See below.
Drivers heading to Staples High School, Bedford Middle School and Wakeman Town Farm are advised to use North Avenue during construction.
Residents on Cross Highway, Silent Grove North, Half Mile Common, Woody Lane and Whippoorwill Lane will continue to have access to their properties, though through traffic will not be permitted across the bridge.
Businesses on Cross Highway, including Gruel Britannia and Christie’s Service, will remain open during construction.
Westport emergency services and representatives for Westport Public Schools transportation have been notified about the project and detour plans.
Motorists are advised to use caution in the construction area, allow extra travel time and follow posted detour and safety signs.
