WESTPORT, CT — An elderly driver suffered minor injuries Friday when the car the person was operating crashed into an exterior wall at the Walgreens at 880 Post Road East in Westport, according to police and fire officials.
The driver, the only person in the vehicle at the time, declined ambulance transportation to the hospital, according to Assistant Fire Chief Jeffrey Gootman.
Officials called for the temporary evacuation of the Walgreens as a precaution, Lt. Anthony Prezioso told Patch.
"The building was evaluated for structural integrity by the Town's building department who did not deem it to be a risk due to the damage sustained," Prezioso said.
According to Prezioso, the driver "apparently shifted the vehicle into the wrong gear and subsequently struck the structure at low speed."
Damage to the vehicle was moderate, according to Prezioso, and damage to the building "was to the brick façade and again mostly cosmetic."
