WESTPORT, CT — A 25-year-old Rahway, New Jersey man has been charged in connection with an alleged $12,000 check fraud scheme involving a payment mailed by Maplewood Senior Living of Westport, police said.

A financial officer for Maplewood Senior Living reported the suspected fraud to Westport police in late March. The executive told police that three checks mailed to the same vendor between October 2025 and February 2026 had apparently been intercepted and altered to name different payees.

One of the checks, for $12,085.12, was altered to list Rahway resident Tiery Mene as the payee, Westport police said.

"Further investigation, including the execution of search warrants for various bank records, revealed that what is alleged to be Tiery Mene had deposited this check into his personal account," Fairfield Police Lt. Anthony Prezioso wrote in a statement. "Once the check cleared, Mene then made several additional payment transactions to himself and others."

Police obtained an arrest warrant for Mene.

Westport detectives traveled Sept. 10 to the Union County Sheriff's Office Division of Corrections in Elizabeth, New Jersey, where Mene was being held in connection with the Westport arrest warrant.

Mene was transported to Westport and charged with third-degree identity theft, first-degree forgery, second-degree larceny and unlawful possession of a personal identifying information access device.

He remains in custody in lieu of bail of $50,000, and he is scheduled to appear in Stamford Superior Court on Oct. 26.
