WESTPORT, CT — The Westport Police Department and Drug Enforcement Administration will host National Prescription Drug Take Back Day on Saturday, Oct. 24, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Westport Center for Senior Activities, 21 Imperial Ave.
The event provides residents with an opportunity to dispose of unwanted, unused or expired prescription medications safely and anonymously at no cost.
The DEA and its partners will collect tablets, capsules, patches and other solid forms of prescription drugs as part of the nationwide initiative aimed at preventing drug misuse and abuse.
According to the DEA, National Prescription Drug Take Back Day has been held for 16 years. Since its inception, the program has collected more than 20.4 million pounds, or 10,200 tons, of medication through partnerships with local law enforcement agencies.
Syringes, sharps and illicit drugs will not be accepted at collection sites. Liquid medications, such as cough syrup, must remain in their original containers with caps tightly sealed to prevent leakage.
Westport police also reminded residents that a year-round prescription drug collection bin is available in the lobby of police headquarters, allowing medications to be disposed of outside designated collection events.
Medication disposal bags are also available in the police headquarters lobby. The bags can be used to dispose of liquid and pill medications in regular household garbage when used according to the provided instructions.
