"A flare tower operation is underway to safely burn off the propane," officials wrote on X.

When the road will reopen was not disclosed.

The closure could impact the afternoon dismissal at nearby Greens Farms Elementary School, according to John Bayers
Assistant Superintendent for Human Resources & General Administration for Westport Public Schools:

Dear GFS Families,

Due to a construction accident earlier this afternoon, the Westport Police and Fire Departments have designated a road closure near the intersection of Hillandale Road and Center Street. This area is a short distance from Greens Farms Elementary School. The road closure is expected to last for several hours.

First Student has been notified and is working to adjust routes to minimize any impacts on bus service. Nonetheless, we anticipate heavy traffic in the area will cause some delays for bus service and any families picking up their children by car.

Should the district receive notification that the road closure has been lifted before dismissal, we will let families know.

Respectfully,

John Bayers
Assistant Superintendent for Human Resources & General Administration
