Positive Directions Launches Support Group for Middle-School Girls

Westport, CT – Positive Directions-The Center for Prevention and Counseling announced that it will launch “GEMS: Girls Empowered, Mindful & Strong” – an activity-based support group for 7th and 8th grade girls starting this October.
Created as a result of trends the therapists were seeing in their one-on-one sessions with clients, the group will address topics related to: building healthier relationships, assertiveness skills, engaging in positive peer relationships and empowering girls to make safer choices. Angelina Miceli, LCSW, Positive Direction’s Adolescent and Family Therapist, created the group using a curriculum that was developed by Harvard Medical School’s Center of Excellence in Women’s Health. The curriculum was pilot-tested over a year with diverse populations and has been adapted to meet the needs of this particular group.
The group meets Thursday evenings from 6pm-7pm for 8 weeks beginning October 18 at Positive Directions’ office in Westport. This is a counselor-led support group that is open to girls ages 12-14. Space is limited. Registration is required by October 11.
