Arrest Made In 2021 Attack That Broke Westport Cop's Wrist

WESTPORT, CT — A 20-year-old New Haven man was arrested on a warrant charging him with an assault on a Westport police officer in 2021 that broke the officer's wrist, according to authorities.

Cameron Baker surrendered to Westport police on Wednesday, and was charged with assault on a public safety officer, and threatening, in connection with the October 2021 incident on Center Street in Westport.

The incident began when officers were called to the area on a report of a man "acting erratically and drinking motor oil," according to Westport Police Lt. Eric Woods.

"Responding officers located Mr. Baker walking in the middle of Center Street and attempted to engage him in conversation," Woods said. "Mr. Baker was actively drinking a liquid, later identified as liquid fuel additive, and yelling at officers. Officers began to follow Mr. Baker down Center Street when he began to run while continuing to drink this liquid. Officers caught up with Mr. Baker where he immediately began to fight with officers."

During the tussle, Baker repeatedly punched officers in the head, and one of them, was knocked to the ground and broke his wrist.

Westport police did not disclose the name of the officer, but Woods told Patch that the injury temporarily sidelined the officer.

"Yes, the injured officer missed time while his injuries healed, but has since returned to full duty," Woods said.

In the midst of the fight, Baker also "referred to officers with derogatory names and made threatening statements concerning officers and their families," before he was eventually taken into custody.

At the time, Baker was taken to Norwalk Hospital for evaluation, but after that, his whereabouts were not disclosed.

Westport police obtained the warrant for Baker's arrest, but when asked what took so long between the incident and his arrest Tuesday, Woods declined to comment.

"As to Baker's location, I cannot comment further," Woods told Patch, but added that he was "unable to turn himself in until he did" on Tuesday.

Baker was released Tuesday after posting bond on bail of $50,000, and he is scheduled to appear in Stamford Superior Court on Jan. 26.
