Barge Fire Broke Out During Westport Fireworks Display: Chief Kronick
The offshore fire was reported at about 9:30 p.m.
WESTPORT, CT — A fire was reported Thursday night on the barge used to ignite the annual Westport Police Athletic League Fireworks Celebration, according to Westport Fire Chief Michael Kronick.
No injuries reported in the 9:30 p.m. fire, nor was there any property damage.
The blaze started on the barge's deck used to launch the fireworks, and the cause of the fire is under investigation at this time.

"The Westport Fire Department was able to coordinate with the crew from Fireworks by Grucci to ensure their safety and the safety of the public during the fire," Kronick said in a statement. "Westport Firefighters on the scene were assisted by a fire boat from the Norwalk Fire Department to extinguish the fire."
Westport and Norwalk firefighters extinguished the fire by 11:25 p.m., according to Kronick, and the barge was able to return to Long Island to set up for another fireworks display on Friday night.
