Greens Farms Academy December Sport Roundup
Many teams pulled off impressive feats this past month.

Girls varsity basketball
The Greens Farms Academy girls varsity basketball team went 1-1 on the week against NEPSAC opponents Chase Collegiate and The Watkinson School, leaving GFA at 2-2 on the season.

On Wednesday, Dec. 9, GFA defeated Chase Collegiate 59-25. Junior captain Lexi Kimball’s (Fairfield) had a game-high 24 points, 10 steals and 6 assists. The Dragons’ defense combined for 25 steals. Junior Olivia Sullivan (Norwalk) had 13 points and 5 rebounds; freshman Katherine Marcus (New Canaan) had 8 points, 6 rebounds and 4 assists; eighth grader Ashley Humphrey (Darien) added 5 points and 3 steals.
GFA faced Watkinson School on Dec. 12, 80-53. Kimball finished with a game-high 31 points, including six shots from behind the arc. Sullivan finished the game with 11 points, while Marcus chipped in 6. After two weeks of play and four games, Kimball has 117 points and 23 steals, earning her the award of News Channel 12’s Athlete of the Week.

Varsity wrestling
The GFA Dragon wrestling team traveled to the Loomis Chaffee Holiday Duals. Forfeiting several weight classes and missing several key starters the Dragons were never able to make up the points they were giving up and were defeated by several tough teams including Brunswick, Lawrenceville from New Jersey, Loomis Chaffee, and Northfield Mt Hermon. On a high note sophomore Sam Stuart (Fairfield) was undefeated on the day pinning all four of his opponents
Varsity squash
GFA girls squash suffered a tough defeat to Westover on Wednesday, losing 7-0. The team’s No. 1, sophomore Katie Mackle (New Canaan), played the closest match of her season, finishing 11-1, 9-11, 3-11, 11-7, 8-11. Ingrid Backe (Fairfield) also played a tight match, 5-11, 8-11, 4-11. Playing in her second match ever, sophomore Laine Capshaw (Easton) finished 2-11, 5-11, 5-11.
GFA boys took on The Brunswick School, narrowly losing 3-4. Captain senior Jack Mackle (New Canaan), playing No. 1, dispatched his opponent in three games, 11-2, 14-12, 11-9. Sophomore Duda Voldman (Stamford), who played in the second spot, won his match in four games 6-11, 11-2, 11-3, 11-7. The team’s No. 6, sophomore Alex Necakov (Darien), also won his match in a decisive three games, 11-9, 11-2, 11-8. The final match came down to sophomore John Selkowitz (Norwalk), who was competing at the No. 3 spot and finishing 11-9, 8-11, 9-11, 6-11.
Boys varsity basketball
On Tuesday, Dec. 8, the Dragons suffered their biggest defeat in the past six years at the hands of FAA and New England rival, St Luke’s Storm, 86-37. GFA was missing two big pieces of their line-up, senior Dom Cristiano (Valhalla, N.Y.) and junior Sunday Okeke (Darien). Senior Isaac Manton (Greenwich) scored 15 pts, four rebounds and two assists. Junior Elvin Rodriguez (Harlem, N.Y.) scored seven, rebounded seven and assisted on two. Junior Evan Roteman (Chappaqua, N.Y.) had seven rebounds and five assists. Senior Chile Larraguibel (Greenwich) had six points and five rebounds. Sophomore Henry Holzinger (Norwalk) had four rebounds and three assists. Freshman Brady Reynolds (Wilton) scored, rebounded twice and blocked a shot.
Friday, GFA continued to suffer through an injury-plagued rough patch, losing pace with Hopkins in the fourth quarter of this game, 77-51. Dragons’ stats leaders: Larraguibel, 14 points and seven rebounds; Manton 11 points and seven rebounds; Roteman, 10 points, six rebounds and five steals; and sophomore Bennett Close (Norwalk) had seven points. Holzinger had four assists. Jacob Manton (Greenwich) had four rebounds and a game-high five assists.
Boys varsity fencing
The GFA boys’ varsity fencing team competed in a home meet, Saturday, Dec. 12, against Greenwich High School, Milford High School, and Bridgeport Central High School, and finished the day with a 2-1 record, winning against Milford (19-8) and Bridgeport (20-7) and losing to Greenwich (9-18).
Foil
Boys foil lost 3-6 to Greenwich; sophomore Teddy Gartland (Darien) went 3-0. Sophomores Matt Jackmauh (Old Greenwich) and Chili Hopkins (Old Greenwich) both had their first matches of the season. Against CHS, GFA lost 3-6. Gartland went undefeated.
Epee
The boys’ epee squad defeated GHS epee 6-3. Senior captain Ryan Petschek (Norwalk) finished 1-2. Junior Phil Nicopoulos (Wilton) fenced with a French grip epee for the first time and finishing the round 3-0. Junior Luke Duffy (Wilton) went 2-1. GFA narrowly lost against Milford epee, ending the round 4-5. Petschek and Nicopoulos both went 1-2. Duffy finished the round 2-1. GFA boys epee won 8-1 against CHS. Petschek went 2-1; Nicopoulos and Duffy both went 3-0.
Saber
In boys saber freshman Alex Galik (Darien) went 0-3 against Greenwich; junior Will Whitman (Stamford) also went 0-3, including a close 5-4 loss. GFA boys saber won their round against Milford saber 6-3. Senior and team armorer Matthew Lichtenberg (Stamford) went 3-0. Whitman finished the round 2-1. Galik ended the round 1-2.
Girls varsity fencing
The GFA girls varsity fencing team competed in a home quad meet on Dec. 12, defeating all three schools: Greenwich High School (14-13), Milford High School (26-1), and Bridgeport Central High School (20-7).
Foil
The girls foil squad defeated GHS foil, 6-3. Seniors Kate Koster (Westport), Kate Allan (Fairfield) and captain Erica Im (Trumbull) all finished 2-1. Against Milford, Im and Koster both finished 3-0. Allan tied 1-1, subbing in newcomer freshman Alida Deutsch (Westport) who won her bout 5-3. The team lost to Central High 4-5, with Im going undefeated 3-0.
Epee
The girls epee squad defeated GHS epee 8-1. Senior captain Taiylor Nunn (Westport), and senior Caroline Booth (Westport) finished 3-0. Senior Lauren Telesz (Fairfield) finished 2-0. Freshman Amy Petschek (Norwalk) subbed in for Telesz, ultimately losing her match 1-5. GFA won 7-2 against Bridgeport epee. Nunn and Telesz finished 2-0.
Saber
Girls saber lost 0-9 against GHS. Junior Shira Friedson (Trumbull) and freshman Hannah Calzone (Norwalk) both narrowly lost, 4-5. Senior Daria Locher (Darien) and sophomore Caroline Telesz (Fairfield) lost 2-5.
