Greens Farms Academy Player Reaches Scoring Milestone
She tallied the 1,000th point of her career in a victory Saturday at Hotchkiss.

LAKEVILLE, CT — Two generations ago, somewhere back in the early 1950s if you’re looking at the calendar, a member of the Marcus family was having the time of his life at a secluded prep school in Lakeville, Connecticut.
On Saturday afternoon, another Marcus made history at the very same Hotchkiss School her grandfather once attended.
Greens Farms Academy senior point guard Katherine Marcus scored the 1,000th point of her career inside Hotchkiss’s William C. Fowle Gymnasium.

Marcus scored 30 points in GFA’s 60-38 win over the Bearcats, giving her an even 1,000 heading into Monday’s game against King.
She is the third GFA girl to reach 1,000 points, following in the footsteps of Lexi Kimball, the school’s all-time leading scorer, and Jasmine Williams, who reached the milestone in 2008.

A technical foul free throw in the final three minutes allowed Marcus to hit the milestone.
“I knew I needed 30 but I wasn’t keeping track of my points, so I was surprised,” said Marcus, who was mobbed by teammates after the game was stopped. “I thought it would happen against King.”
The ideal situation would have been to have it happen inside the friendly confines of the Coyle Gymnasium, but GFA needed every single one of the 30 points Marcus scored.
While the final score appears to be an easy win for the Dragons, it was a single digit game with six minutes remaining.
“We said if we were going to win, we’d need her to play out of her mind and score points and she did,” said GFA coach Jen Harris, whose team was without two seniors, including one starter. “I was convinced she’d do it against King. Maybe I shouldn’t have put it past her. She went out and got them.”
Marcus had 17 points at the half, helping GFA build a 10-point lead.
As Hotchkiss hung around, and with a raucous student section trying to bolster the home team, every Marcus point proved more and more important.
“I would have preferred to have done it at a home game because of the home crowd and having my friends there,” Marcus admitted. “But having it here, where my grandfather went to school, with this crowd and the fact it was a really intense atmosphere, made it equally special. I’m glad I did it.”
After the game, in the ultimate sign of respect, a number of those Hotchkiss students came on to the court to congratulate Marcus on her honor.
Marcus was on the court when Kimball scored her 1,000th—and when she became the school’s all-time leading scorer—so matching the first milestone meant a lot to her.
“Being the third girl to do it is really cool,” Marcus said. “Having witnessed Lexi do it, and being there for that special moment, I’m just really happy I was able to do it, too.”
Even more important than her 1,000th career point, though, was the fact that win was GFA’s fifth straight to open the season.
Harris has records going back to 2005 and knows it’s the team’s best start since then, at least.
“Winning five straight games on the road is pretty incredible,” Marcus said. “Coming in with new girls, a new season, I didn’t know what to expect. Five-and-oh is just awesome.”
Marcus, needless to say, is a big reason why as she has helped lead the Dragons into coming together early.
Harris doesn’t want to picture a future without the four-year starter.
“She is someone who is going to be very, very hard to replace as point guard,” Harris said. “She has ice in her veins and we needed that today.”
