Dangerous Heat, Thunderstorms Possible All Weekend in Westport: UPDATE

We're facing possible thunderstorms for several days, dangerous heat and even flash flooding concerns. Here are the latest details.

It’s hard to keep track of all the different advisories issued by the National Weather Service this weekend for Connecticut.

There’s the seemingly almost daily Hazardous Weather Outlook, Heat Advisory, Air Quality Alert, and even an Excessive Heat Watch for parts of the state.

What this all adds up to is it’s going to be hot, likely dangerously hot if you’re outdoors for prolonged periods of time, and there will be several chances beginning today and continuing through the weekend for fast-moving thunderstorms that pop up out of nowhere. Some of the storms could be strong to severe, the National Weather Service predicts.

Definitely, not the greatest forecast for the weekend, and one that will keep us on our toes as one minute the sky will be seemingly tranquil and then boom there’s thunder and lightning moving in fast.

The chance for storms is approximately 50 percent for the entire state of Connecticut today through Sunday night. And there’s a 100 percent chance that it’s going to feel hotter than 100 degrees the entire weekend too.

Here’s the latest National Weather Service forecast for the area:

Friday: Showers and thunderstorms are expected anytime after noon in southern Connecticut and in the late afternoon in Hartford and Tolland counties. The chances for storms are around 50 percent. Temps in the mid 90s for the state and the heat index will approach 105 degrees today. There will be periods of sun too. Some heavy rain is expected when and if storms move through.

Friday night: Showers and storms are expected to end by midnight.

Saturday: Almost a carbon copy of Friday’s forecast. Temps in the mid 90s, heat index approaching 110 degrees. Showers and thunderstorms possible in the afternoon and evening hours. Storms are expected after 2 p.m. in southern Connecticut and 4 p.m. in northern Connecticut. Heavy rain is expected with the storms.

Sunday: Again temps in the low 90s with a heat index near 100 degrees. Also there is a chance of showers and thunderstorms in the afternoon and evening hours once again. Skies will be partly sunny in southern Connecticut but mostly cloudy in northern Connecticut. Chance of showers and storms continues Sunday night too.

Connecticut is in the midst of a drought right now, let’s see if that is still the case after this weekend as we could see spurts of heavy rain accompanied by strong thunderstorms.

And yes, it’s going to feel like 100 degrees a good amount of the time too. The National Weather Service has issued a “Hazardous Weather Outlook” for Connecticut beginning now and continuing through the weekend for both stormy weather and dangerous temperatures.

Parts of the state are already under a “Heat Advisory” too. It’s not going to be a pleasant few days.

Here is the latest information on advisories issued by the National Weather Service:

Southern Connecticut: The weather service say any thunderstorms that develop today and tonight will be capable of producing torrential rainfall and localized flash flooding. And for this weekend, any thunderstorms that develop will also produce heavy rain and flooding concerns.

The Heat Index in southern Connecticut will make it feel like 105 degrees on Saturday too.

Hartford and Tolland counties: Hot and humid weather through the weekend with the heat index approaching 105 degrees during the afternoons. Residents are urged to take precaution and limit their time outside.

Also rounds of showers and thunderstorms are expected with heavy rain at times, and flooding will be a concern too, the weather service writes. Strong to severe thunderstorms are also possible too.

Detailed look at the upcoming weather forecast for Connecticut:

Thursday: Scattered showers and thunderstorms which could produce some heavy rain. Temps around 90 on the coast and mid 90s inland. Mostly cloudy conditions.

Friday: Again more thunderstorms likely, temps in the 90s and the heat index over 100 degrees. Mostly cloudy again.

Saturday: More showers and thunderstorms in the afternoon and evening possibly, and temps in the mid 90s with the heat index approaching 105 degrees.

Sunday: More showers and storms forecast for Sunday afternoon and evening with temps in the 90s and the heat index once again near 100 degrees. There may be periods of sun on Sunday too.
