The New York Times Asks, 'What's Your Commute Time Worth?'
Westport and two nearby communities in Fairfield County offer some eye-popping numbers.

You may be one of tens of thousands of people who commute into New York from Connecticut, but have you ever wondered how much that commute is worth by the minute?
The New York Times did and recently published a breakdown of what those commutes costs for various communities along Metro-North's New Haven Line, and some of those figures are astounding.
Using data compiled by appraisal firm Miller Samuel, the cost per minute to commute from Darien into Grand Central Station is $22,881, based on a 59-minute commute where the median home price is $1,350,000. From next door Rowayton (part of Norwalk), the cost is $20,161 per minute, based on a 62-minute commute where the median home price is $1,250,000.

The Times looked at communities north of Stamford for the report, taking the Miller Samuel information on median home prices and divided them by the commute time.
As you go up the line, the savings per minute can be dramatic. For example, a commute from Westport, just two communities beyond Darien, costs $17,493, or more than $5,000 less than Darien. Greens Farms, a section of Westport, costs about $1,400 more because homes are more expensive than in Westport overall.
