Man Illegally Changed Check from $20 To $4,864: Westport Police

The accused was released after posting a $35,000 bond.

WESTPORT, CT — A 27-year-old New York, New York, man was arrested on a warrant this week charging him larceny, forgery and related violations after Westport police said he illegally changed a check from $20 to $4,864 before depositing it into his own account.

George Colon was taken into custody by Westport police on Monday from Westchester County Corrections, and was charged with the following:

  • Identity Theft, 2nd degree
  • Illegal Credit Card Use
  • Larceny, 2nd degree
  • Forgery, 2nd degree
  • Criminal Impersonation

The case began in January, when Westport police were alerted by a local resident that a "check they mailed had been intercepted and the amount was changed from $20.00 to $4864.00."

Additionally, the payee had also been changed from the intended recipient to George Colon, who Westport detectives developed as a suspect with surveillance video and other methods.

Colon was released after posting bond on bail of $35,000, and he is scheduled to appear in Stamford Superior Court on Jan. 18, 2023.
