Opening Day Looms for Staples High School Teams

WESTPORT, CT — High school sports practices have been ongoing for nearly two weeks and many preseason scrimmages have been played, but the real deal begins Thursday - opening day of the regular season for many varsity teams.

Here are the scheduled opening contests for varsity teams at Staples High School. For a complete season schedule of Wrecker varsity, JV and freshman teams, visit the CIAC web site.

• field hockey - Thursday, 9/6, at Darien, 4 p.m.
• girls soccer - Friday, 9/7, at Fairfield Warde, 4 p.m.
• football - Friday, 9/7, at Bridgeport Central, 7 p.m.
• boys soccer - Saturday, 9/8, vs. Fairfield Warde, 3 p.m.
• cross country - Tuesday, 9/11, at New Canaan, 4 p.m.
• girls volleyball - Tuesday, 9/11, vs. Weston, 4 p.m.
• boys water polo - Saturday, 9/15, at CP-AC, 2 p.m.
• girls swimming - Monday, 9/17, vs. New Canaan, 4 p.m.
